AMENDMENT LANGUAGE
State Constitutional Provision
- Iowa Const. art. I, § 3: "The general assembly
shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting
the free exercise thereof; nor shall any person be compelled to attend
any place of worship, pay tithes, taxes, or other rates for building
or repairing places of worship, or the maintenance of any minister,
or ministry."

- Rudd v. Ray, 248 N.W.2d 125 (Iowa 1976)
(Iowa Supreme Court held that an Iowa statute providing for salaried
chaplains and religious facilities at a state penitentiary did not
violate the Iowa constitutional provision prohibiting the use of state
taxes to fund places of worship and ministers).
